Create a child diagram

1. Right-click an element on the Canvas or in the Explorer
2. Select New Child Diagram…, name it, and click Create Diagram
3. Name the diagram and press Enter

The diagram is created as a child of the element. On the parent diagram, the element shows a drill-down marker: a small blue down arrow in a corner of the node. The marker is a link to the child diagram.

Navigate to a child diagram

On the parent diagram, double-click the drill-down marker, the blue arrow in the corner of the element:

• If the element has one child diagram, it opens directly
• If the element has multiple child diagrams, a chooser appears — select the one you want

On a child diagram itself, the element’s marker is faint and grey and is not a link: you have already drilled down. To move between an element’s child diagrams, open them from the Explorer, or go back to the parent diagram and drill down again.

Hover over the marker to see which diagram it opens. The marker is a small target, so there are two other ways in: select the element and press Enter, or right-click it and choose Open Child Diagram.

A single click on the marker selects the element, as a click anywhere on it does. Double-clicking the rest of the element does not drill down: it opens the element’s Properties and Notes window.

Navigate back

Click the parent diagram’s tab to return, or double-click it in the Explorer.

Multiple child diagrams

An element can have multiple child diagrams, each showing a different perspective (e.g., internal components, deployment, data flows). The marker’s tooltip says how many there are, and double-clicking it lists them.

Child diagram ownership

In the Explorer, child diagrams appear as children of the element they belong to — not as children of the package:
